From the New York Times:
Abigail Maynard of Wilton, who firmly believes that women should not be barred from any tournaments, submitted her entry to the $30,000 Fairfield County event to be held Feb. 24 at the Sugar Hollow Racquet Club in Ridegfield, Conn. It is a stop on the, regular United States Lawn Tennis Association winter tour.
John Nogrady Jr., the tournament director, who has coached Abbi for several years, accepted the entry.
“I'm allowed to fill the draw with two top local players,” he said, “and Abbi is one of the best around Ridgefield. She's beaten many men and is keen to play.”
When Bill Riordan, the tour director, heard about it, he exploded. “Frankly, I consider this a cheap shot to publicize the women's movement,” he said. But apparently he won't interfere. Perhaps he hopes it will be good for the box office.
